57ft is considered by many people to be the ideal narrowboat length, making for easy passage of the entire canal and river system. Border Rose II was purchased as a shell in 1999 and was partly completed over ten years, with the fit-out finally completed in 2010 when the boat was registered. She has since benefitted from a partial re-fit of the galley and saloon in 2016. Accommodation is currently for two, but with room in the saloon for free standing furniture, a sofa bed could be your choice of seating which would provide sleeping accommodation for guests. Cabin heating is currently via a Squirrel solid fuel stove with back boiler circulating hot water to the radiators. A diesel boiler is fitted but is currently inoperative. Hot water can be heated by the engine and stove. Propulsion is by the trusty Beta 37.5hp diesel engine and a bow thruster is fitted but needs investigation as to why it is inoperative. When shore power is not available, the onboard 2kW inverter should be adequate to cater for domestic requirements. Border Rose is ready to cruise/live aboard without modification although if you are keen on DIY, there is also scope for improvement as time goes by.
